How to legally start a freelance business
Today I have an exclusive interview with Micala Quinn, a former high school teacher, turned freelancer turned online business owner – now helping thousands of stay-at-home moms work from home.
She has helped 1,000+ moms with her course Overwhelmed to Overbooked, to get their first client in 4 weeks and to earn between $500 to $5,000+ a month.
Micala has been featured in Fox4 News, Business Insider and many other popular publications.
Let’s get straight to the interview and see what she has to say.
Hi Micala, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
My name is Micala, a mom to three beautiful children, two of which I am very grateful to have in my arms and one who is watching over our family from Heaven.
I was previously a teacher working 50-60 hours a week & making pennies. Oh, yea & I was absolutely miserable dropping my baby off at daycare every day.
The incessant rushing caused me a lot of stress, anxiousness, and anger…which quickly turned into resentment.
I resented my job, myself, and my husband. I felt stuck. I felt trapped and like there were NO options for me to find a stable, reliable way to make income from home.
I needed to work. I needed an income.
And that’s how I found freelancing.
In 2017, I walked out of the classroom for good to become a work-at-home mom. Shortly after I left, I realized that I was not alone. That there are moms everywhere who are struggling with some of the very same things I was. They were looking for solutions. They were looking for answers.
And since 2017, I have helped tens of thousands of women through my free resources and helped over 1000 through my paid programs actually build their dream work-life balanced career.
What is Freelance work?
A freelancer is someone who works as an independent contractor to help online businesses.
As a freelancer, YOU will have control over when you work, how much you work, where you work, and how much you charge… lots of moms and millennials are choosing to freelance because they are sick of the lack of flexibility that traditional jobs require.
For example, a Virtual Assistant (VA for short) is a service provider that takes over the administrative tasks for a business.
Virtual assistants typically charge hourly packages and do a variety of tasks depending on the client’s needs. VA’s do not need to have any specific experience but MUST be able to self-teach (aka use youtube or google) and be a quick learner.
Some daily tasks include:
Email inbox management
Schedule social media posts
Blog post management
Virtual assistants are a jack of all trades people and essential to all online businesses, but even can help local and small brick and mortar businesses.
Skills are not as important as personality type. Go-getters, problem solvers, figure-it-out types make awesome virtual assistants. Plus – those hiring VAs typically are looking to hire beginners and are willing to help train on the specific tasks the client needs.
How much do freelancers earn?
This really depends on how much you charge per hour and if you want to do this full-time or part-time.
We have moms with a variety of goals in the course group, some are looking for an extra $500 a month & others are making over 5K per month.

A big perk of the OTO program is 6 months access to weekly office hours where you can drop in as needed to get 1:1 help and breakthrough where you’re stuck with me.
A little bit more about these calls:
-they are every Wednesday at noon CST
-they are virtual and informal come as you are! joining from work or the car or with kiddos — whatever you need to do to be there is encouraged — plus you can stay as long or as short as your schedule allows
-calls are recorded so you can watch the replay
I know you are going to get stuck and have challenges (everyone does), but with the FB group and these weekly calls you have daily and weekly options to get the support you need to crush your goals and get home to your babies!
You also get exclusive access to exclusive job leads, 6 months access to expert training, workbooks and more.
How much does the program cost? What if I can’t afford it?
The cost is $997 pay in full (receive an additional 6 months to the coaching calls, FB group, and job leads).
There are payment plans for those that can’t afford it right away. This comes as 6 monthly payments of $197.
Most women are able to make back their investment during month 2 or 3 of the program, some during month 1!
